hail, and farewell
As many of you know, I kind of suck as a moderator and archive maintainer, and the archive for the 2005 ficathon has been offline for quite a little bit. Some might even say years. However, there now exists a site called Archive of Our Own which I am reasonably certain will continue to run without my input, and I hereby propose we post the ficathon fic there immediately. If you do not already have a login for AO3, this is where you request one. If I recall correctly it usually takes a day or so.

I have created a collection called Valabars and a subcollection called Valabars_2005, and when you post your story there is a box of options titled Associations, under which one line is "Post to Collections/Challenges" where you can type in "Valabars_2005". You can also type in the name of the person the story was for under "Recipient." I have tested this process, and you can see my results here: Valabar's 2005. If you have already posted your story at AO3 (I know there's at least one up there) you can edit the story and add this data to the relevant fields.

If you no longer have a copy of your story: fear not, I DO! Unfortunately I cannot post it for you; only the author can post at AO3. Please leave me a comment with your email or email me directly at juliette dot torres at gmail dot com to request anything you need.

I have HIGH HIGH HOPES that the automation of challenge and archival processes at Archive of Our Own mean I might get off my ass and run another challenge. And perhaps even run the damn thing annually. Who knows. I am unlikely to post about that here as by and large lj has pissed me off, so I have created a community on dreamwidth: [community profile] valabars which I shall input some information on... tomorrow, but you may feel free to join now if you like. If you do not have a dreamwidth and would like one, here's a handful of codes (and if these all get used, I have more): Read more...Collapse )

If you do not have a dreamwidth, don't want one, and would still like to participate in potential future Valabar's fic exchanges, tell me! We'll figure something out.

support The-Archive!
I am one of the lucky 10% of users of The Archive at the End of the Universe who received this timely communique from Llama. So I am spreading the news.

The-Archive has got nearly every fanfiction I have ever written in it, with the exception of the Quinlan Vos 100 Fanfics Project, which I thought might be a little too big, muwahaha... and they are nearly always up, easy to read, and easy to use. They are also very all-inclusive with thousands of faniverses to post in.

For those who do NOT know of it, the name is a reference to Douglas Adams, Restaurant at the End of the Universe. And it is exactly that cool a place.

Here is LLAMA---llama@the-archive.net ----

The Archive at the End of the Universe will shortly have a new system in place for reporting problems and requesting new fandoms and characters as well as requesting accounts, and we have a new community on Insanejournal to make this easier for IJ users: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/archiveattheend/.

Please see the post here: http://community.livejournal.com/archiveattheend/14438.html for news on the Archive's future and the current fundraising drive.

If The Archive is still of use to you, or you want to help preserve the work of writers no longer in fandom who are archived here, please help if you can. Even a tiny donation will help ensure The Archive's future. We are already almost at our minimum fundraising target but if we exceed it we can renew the domain for longer and save money that will extend the Archive's future!

Thank you, Llama

http://the-archive.net

P.S. Apologies to anyone who receives this more than once, the site only sent out this message to about 10% of Archive users but it's impossible for me to work out which 10%. I won't be sending any more emails about this to everyone, I promise :)

The Jhereg Slash Merchant
The Jhereg Slash Merchant
When one is acquainted with Dragaera fanciers of a slashing turn of mind, a young fan's fancy oft turns lightly to thoughts of satire, pastiche and porn.

Just such a one is jmtorres, and so, when, upon discussion of the delicate subject of inquiring after fic preferences, she was heard to utter fateful remark " I feel like Vlad talking about work. 'No, I don't do work... I have a friend who does...'" , nothing could be more natural than for image of a Dragaeran slash dealer to arise.

I give you, in the full original form, The Jhereg Slash Merchant.

grey_bard: "I have a friend who has a proprietary interest in tentacle porn."
grey_bard: "Can this be so?"
jmtorres: OH GOD
grey_bard: "Indeed it can."
grey_bard: "Continue."
jmtorres: *dying*
I myself, do not, of course, write tentacle porn.Collapse )

Fic: The Tiassa and the Dzur - A Dragaeran Fable
A ficlet for little Dragaerans that I posted to my livejournal a year ago, and then promptly forgot.

Dzur
*Jumping up and down excitedly* New...book! Eee! *Catches breath* I didn't even know there was a new book on the way, so imagine my surprise when wandering around B&N I looked over... and there it was! Sitting pretty on the endcap. Dzur! A new Taltos novel. I know now that is was released in August... but that doesn't make me any less happy! YAY! *Continues happy jumping*

We are allowed to post Dragaera fics here aren't we?

This...might not be the full story, I'm still not sure if I want to add more to this, or if it's finished. I'd appreciate advice, or any sort of review.

Stick a fork in it, it's done
The archive is live.

ETA: Send feedback, email addresses are linked and all author names = lj names.

Tell me if anything is messed up. Just don't expect me to fix it until tomorrow.

*pokes pinch-hitters*
Come on, my darling pinch-hitters! The deadline's coming up!

(P.S. Everyone else? The archive's going up early tomorrow morning at an unspecified hour, the lateness of which shall be determined largely by if I have to polish this thing I'm scribbling on to fill a hole.)

Pinch-hitters, you didn't hear that! Midnight or bust!

Fuckity.
'Scuse my French.

(Coded two more stories...)

I had thought that I covered with pinch-hits at the very least all of those people who didn't drop out. I knew there were some holes, but I thought they were holes I didn't have to fill. You know, "So and so doesn't need a story, she defaulted on me."

But I have one that's in my checklist as "heard from" but not "turned in," that's for somebody who did write and does need a story. This represents something of a problem to me.

Poll, with the understanding that the person the story's for (and I'm not saying who, that would suck) probably gets the biggest influence.

What should I do?

Write the request myself (probably adds another week or two onto the wait)
1(11.1%)
Get someone else to pinch-hit (no idea how long this would add to the wait. Pinch-hitter would have to offer to fill it fast and understand I would NOT wait for them if they went past the agreed-upon deadline, no really, I mean it this time)
3(33.3%)
Finish the archive, post everything I have, never mind that somebody doesn't have a story. They'll get to read everyone else's.
2(22.2%)
Hire a hit on the defaulter unless they manage to come through.
3(33.3%)

Also emailing the (alleged) defaulter, because it's also entirely possible I just *lost* the file. Man, will my face be red if that's the case.

If you'd like to volunteer to pinch-hit, speak now. It might actually turn out to be a "finish as fast as you can, if I finish the archive first then the archive will go live without it but we can put it up later" thing.

Newbie
Hiya,

I'm new here, in case the subject didn't give it away. I really like the Vlas Taltos novels *Points to username* in case you couldn't tell. My fave I think would have to be Dragon... I wish there were more though... that last one was a cliffie, if you know what I mean. See ya'll round!
